This 6-week advanced practicum plays an important part in the professional development of students at the end of their diploma training which is preparing them to work in the field or to enter third year of a Child and Youth Care degree program or a Social Work Degree program. The practicum will provide opportunity for the learner to relate theory to practice as well as to develop some o f the many professional skills required in the work setting. The support and guidance of the practicum mentor is critical to the process by providing structured and specific on- site feedback.
As this is the final practicum, every effort is made to provide a realistic work-related employment situation. Students who are successful in this course should have the confidence and the competence to step into appropriate employment situations, have a realistic assessment of their own strengths and limitations and be able to design, implement and evaluate programs and interventions appropriate to client and/or agency needs.
Emphasis is placed on observation and recording skills, agency familiarity, awareness of self in relation to clients. The ability to demonstrate beginning level case management planning, prevention, intervention, and case-presentation skills with both a one-to-one focus and a group focus are also emphasized. The student’s primary purpose is to be able to demonstrate the understanding of professional competencies within the field of Human Services. The student must be able to demonstrate knowledge, skills, and self-awareness relevant to the field.
