PEAC 201 looks at conflicts around the world related to water, timber, diamonds, gold, oil and cocoa, along with a broad range of constructive approaches to ameliorating them, including environmental peacebuilding, certification, solidarity, international accompaniment, nonviolent direct action, divestment, and fair/direct trade. We focus especially on the growing power of nonviolent citizen movements resisting oil extraction, pipelines, and climate change in favour of renewable energy, Indigenous rights and climate justice, both abroad and in our own backyards.

Through films, readings, games, debates, case studies, lectures, guest speakers and collaborative learning, students will gain analytical skills and intellectual understanding of these important current-day issues, as well as a hopeful window on some positive – and often under-reported – changes taking place around the world.
