ECCE 168 Observing and Reflecting Practicum I is a hands-on observation course that combines weekly class meetings with weekly visits to early childhood programs. The course focuses on developing students’ skills in observing, noticing, and collecting traces of children’s learning through a range of multi-modal methods such as photographs, drawings, written notes, artifacts, and audio reflections.
During practicum hours, students spend time watching and listening closely to children and educators, paying attention to relationships, environments, interests, routines, and the everyday events that shape early learning. Students will begin to explore how these observations can inform responsive and relational curriculum thinking.
The course introduces pedagogical narrations as outlined in the BC Early Learning Framework (2019). Students will practice noticing, documenting, interpreting, and engaging in collaborative dialogue, while learning how to connect their observations to the Living Inquiries and Pathways.
Students will also be introduced to a common worlds approach, including learning with Indigenous worldviews, local places, and the relationships between living and non-living beings.
Overall, the course supports students in developing foundational skills in observing, listening, documenting, and reflecting within early learning environments in alignment with the BC Early Learning Framework.
