Peace & Conflict Studies 203 explores restorative justice as theory and as practice. Themes include retribution and punishment, harm and healing, belonging, affect, shame, trauma, empathy, forgiveness, and Indigenous approaches to justice as healing. These themes are explored in a multi-scalar fashion, at the levels of the family and the local community, both in relation to, and outside of, the criminal justice system.
In the latter part of the course we turn our attention to applied practices, looking at victim-offender mediation, family group conferencing, and peacemaking circles.
